What is the Foradil inhaler used for?

Foradil Inhaler, with the generic name formoterol fumarate, is an oral inhalation indicated to treat asthma. This is prescribed together with other long-term asthma control drugs like inhaled corticosteroids. Foradil Inhaler is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) and to treat bronchoconstriction in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. By controlling breathing symptoms, Foradil Inhaler allows patients to go back to their normal everyday activities.

This is available in Foradil Inhaler 12 mcg formoterol fumarate powder.

How does Foradil Inhaler work?

This long-acting beta-adrenergic receptor acts in the lungs as a bronchodilator. The hormone stimulates intracellular adenyl cyclase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic-3’, 5’-adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP). Increased levels of cyclic AMP can relax bronchial smooth muscle and inhibit the release of mediators of immediate hypersensitivity from cells, including mast cells.

How to use Foradil Inhaler

Read the medication guide or information leaflet that comes with this product first. Do not use any inhalation without fully understanding the drug information and precautions printed in the guide. If you have questions about using this inhaler or need further medical advice, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Remember to use this inhaler regularly or exactly as prescribed. If necessary, make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your doses. If you are prescribed other inhalers at the same time, ensure that there is at least a minute of interval between each. Do not alter your dosage as it is based on your age, medical condition, and response to therapy. Increasing your dose or frequency could decrease the effectiveness of the inhaler and increase the risk of side effects.

Step by step guide in using Foradil Inhaler:

  1. Peel the paper backing of the capsule. Make sure to do this only when you are ready to administer your dose.
  2. Place the capsule into the chamber in the base of the aerosolized.
  3. Hold the aerosolized in an upright position and press the buttons on the mouthpiece simultaneously. Make sure to only press in once. This is done to pierce the capsule inside the inhaler. Once you hear the click, release the buttons.
  4. Exhale fully and deeply, away from the mouthpiece.
  5. Slightly tilt your head back. Put the mouthpiece around your lips, with the blue buttons on the sides.
  6. Inhale deeply and quickly. As you do this, the capsule will spin around the chamber.
  7. Remove the aerosolized inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for as long as you can.
  8. Exhale normally.
  9. Open the inhaler and check if there is remaining powder in it. If there is, Repeat steps 4-8.
  10. Once you are done, discard the capsule accordingly.
  11. Close the inhaler and replace the cover.

Precautions when using Foradil Inhaler

Before you start using this oral inhalation, you must fully disclose your medical history to your physician, including any history of metabolism problems, hyperthyroidism, aneurysm, pheochromocytoma, hypertension, and heart problems. Some diseases or conditions may impact how your body will respond to the medication. You should also discuss all prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are using because of the possible drug interactions.

Keep an eye out for any allergic reactions while on this treatment. Do not use this inhaler if you have a known allergy to formoterol, arformoterol, salmeterol, metaproterenol, albuterol, epinephrine, pseudoephedrine, other sympathomimetic drugs, or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Seek emergency attention once you notice signs of hypersensitivity response, such as severe dizziness, skin rashes, swelling of the face, hives, and trouble breathing.

This prescription inhalation may cause QT prolongation. This should be considered a medical emergency, especially if you experience fast or irregular breathing, severe dizziness, and fainting. To avoid this irregular heart rhythm, stay hydrated at all times and do not take diuretics. You should also be monitored for low levels of potassium and magnesium, for they may also increase the risk of QT prolongation.

Dizziness is one of the medication’s side effects. This could be aggravated by alcohol. As much as possible, limit or avoid drinking alcohol. You should also practice extreme caution when doing activities that require alertness, such as using machinery and driving.

Pregnant and breastfeeding moms must use this oral inhalation only if clearly needed. Always keep in mind that the possible advantages should outweigh the potential hazards.
