Linzess for constipation

Constipation is a condition in which bowel movements become less frequent three or fewer times a week, and stools are hard to pass. To treat constipation in adults associated with IBS and CIC, Linzess is prescribed.

Linzess works by binding to GC-C receptors in the intestinal epithelium which leads to the activation of Guanylate Cyclase-C (GC-C). This results in increased release of intestinal fluid and speeded GI movement, as well as decreasing the amount of pain in the abdomen and digestive tract, or visceral pain. These actions help in softening the stool, having regular bowel movements, and relieving abdominal pain.

Directions

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Read the medication guides or instruction sheets carefully and follow all the directions on the prescription label.

Take this medication orally (by mouth) on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before having your first meal of the day. Swallow the capsules whole and do not chew, crush or break them.

If it is hard for you to swallow the capsule whole, you may open it and sprinkle the contents into a spoonful of apple sauce or an ounce of water. If needed, you may also administer it with water through a nasogastric or gastrostomy tube.

Pour around 30 ml of lukewarm bottled water into a clean glass or cup for oral administration with water. Open the capsule and drizzle the contents (beads) into the water. Swirl the mixture of beads and water gently for 20 seconds, then immediately swallow the entire mixture. Add another 30 ml of water to any beads left in the cup, then swirl for 20 seconds and swallow. Avoid storing the mixture for later use.
