Hyalgan (Sodium Hyaluronate) is a prescription prefilled injection used to relieve pain due to knee osteoarthritis in patients who do not get adequate relief from simple painkillers, exercise, or physical therapy. Osteoarthritis commonly affects joints (usually the hip and knee joints). People affected with this condition typically present with joint pain or stiffness. The active substance in Hyalgan is Sodium Hyaluronate. Sodium Hyaluronate belongs to the class of medicine called an intra-articular agent. How Hyalgan relieves pain is not known, although it is similar to hyaluronan occurring naturally in the joints. It is believed to help restore the synovial fluid to a healthier state, thereby reducing the pain associated with osteoarthritis.
