Product Details

Tryptan (Tryptophan) is an RX medication that is combined with other medications to treat bipolar affective disorder. It may also be prescribed for other problems such as anxiety, sleep, apnea, premenstrual syndrome and other problems. Tryptophan works by affecting the levels of certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. The usual recommended dose of L-tryptophan is 8g to 12g daily taken in three to four equally divided doses with meals or snacks.

Tryptan Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Tryptan may include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, loss of appetite and nausea. The serious side effects may include:
• Agitation;
• Confusion;
• Diarrhea;
• Fever;
• Overactive reflexes;
• Poor coordination;
• Restlessness;
• Shivering;
• Sweating;
• Trembling or shaking;
• Twitching;
• Vomiting

You should not take Tryptan if you are allergic to Tryptophan or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you are taking including OTC and herbal medications. This medication may affect your blood sugar so your doctor should monitor your condition closely if you are taking this medication. Typtan should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if L-tryptophan passes into breast milk. There may be an interaction between Tryptan and other medications such as lithium, MAO inhibitors, SSRI antidepressants.
