Indications

Pancrease MT 4 is a medication that contains lipase, protease, and amylase as its active ingredients.

Pancrease MT 4 is indicated for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, a condition characterized by a deficiency of exocrine pancreatic enzymes, resulting in the inability to properly digest food or maldigestion.

Use and Dosage

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed. Do not switch brands of this medicine without your doctor’s advice.

Pancrelipase should be taken with a meal or snack.

Carefully follow all directions when giving this medicine to a child. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

Do not crush, chew, or break a pancrelipase capsule or tablet. Swallow it whole with a full glass of water.

Do not hold the pill in your mouth. Pancrelipase can irritate the inside of your mouth.

If you cannot swallow a capsule whole, open it and mix the medicine with applesauce. Swallow the mixture right away without chewing. Do not mix the medicine with infant formula or breast milk.

Do not inhale the powder from a pancrelipase capsule or allow it to touch your skin. It may cause irritation, especially to your nose and lungs.

Pancrelipase is sometimes given with a stomach acid reducer such as Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, or Protonix. Follow your doctor’s instructions about taking all medicines needed to treat your condition.

Doses are based on weight. Your dose may change if you gain or lose weight.

Side Effects

The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.

The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people taking this medication. Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.

Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and they are severe or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on managing side effects.

  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Sore throat and cough
  • Vomiting

Although most of the side effects listed below do not happen very often, they could lead to serious problems if you do not seek medical attention.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Hives
  • Irritation around the anal area
  • Itching
  • Signs of gout (e.g., joint pain, swelling and warmth of joints)
  • Symptoms of high blood sugar (e.g., frequent urination, increased thirst, excessive eating, unexplained weight loss, poor wound healing, infections, fruity breath odor)
  • Symptoms of low blood sugar (e.g., cold sweat, cool pale skin, headache, fast heartbeat, weakness)
  • Rash

Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention if any of the following occur:

  • Signs of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., abdominal cramps, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, or swelling of the face and throat)

Cautions

  • Before taking pancrelipase, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or pork protein; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: sudden/severe swelling of the pancreas (acute pancreatitis), sudden worsening of long-term disease of the pancreas, gout, kidney disease, high uric acid level in the blood (hyperuricemia), intestinal problems (such as blockage).
  • If you have diabetes, pancrelipase may affect your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet.
  • Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
  • During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
