Description

Flovent HFA Details

Flovent HFA (generic name: fluticasone propionate) is an oral respiratory inhalation indicated as a maintenance treatment for asthma. This is used as prophylactic therapy for patients four years old and above. It is also used to treat asthma if oral corticosteroid therapy is required. It controls and prevents breathing symptoms, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. This oral inhalation is classified as inhaled corticosteroid or ICS. This is available in Flovent HFA 220 mcg (=250 mcg), Flovent HFA 44 mcg (=50 mcg), and Flovent HFA 110 mcg inhaler (=125 mcg).

Have Side Effects of Flovent HFA

The common side effects of this prescription inhaler are sore throat, hoarseness, mouth/throat/nose dryness, stuffy nose, and headache. In addition, you should report severe adverse effects, such as white patches inside the mouth, vision problems, easy bruising and bleeding, signs of infection, bone pain, increasing urination, and worsening breathing problems. IF this happens, call your doctor.

Flovent HFA Warnings

This inhaler contains corticosteroids which can affect your immune response. You are more likely to get infected and experience serious symptoms of infection while using this drug. To avoid this, practice good personal hygiene all the time and avoid coming in contact with people who have an infection or have recently received live-attenuated vaccines.

This inhaler should not be administered if you have a known allergy to fluticasone or any inactive ingredients this inhaler contains. Signs of serious allergic reactions are swelling of the face and neck, swollen lymph nodes, skin rashes, itchiness, trouble breathing, and severe dizziness. Call the emergency medical hotline if this occurs.

This prescription drug is also contraindicated for people with a history of eye problems, liver disease, osteoporosis, and recent infections. Because of potential drug interactions, you must also talk about all prescription medications, nonprescription medications, herbal products, and supplements you are using.

How does Flovent HFA work?

This inhaler is a synthetic tri-fluorinated corticosteroid. It works by inhibiting multiple cell types and mediator secretion involved in the asthmatic response. It lessens the swelling of the airway and the lungs, which relieves breathing symptoms.

How should I use Flovent HFA?

You must read the patient information guide and use this inhaler exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Use this inhaler twice daily, in the morning and the evening, 12 hours apart. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your doses. Do not increase/decrease your dosage or use it more frequently than prescribed.

Step by step Medication Guide:

  1. Make sure that the canister is inserted tightly into the actuator. See if the counter is showing through the small window in the actuator.
  2. Shake thoroughly for five seconds. Uncap the mouthpiece and check if there are first or any foreign objects before.
  3. Hold it in an upright or vertical position with the mouthpiece down.
  4. Through the mouth, exhale as deeply and fully.
  5. Insert the mouthpiece in the mouth with your lips tightly around it. Push the canister down as you inhale the medication deeply and thoroughly through the mouth.
  6. Let go of the canister and remove the mouthpiece from your mouth.
  7. Hold your breath for around 10 seconds. Then, exhale slowly. If you need to take two puffs, wait for not less than 30 seconds before taking another puff.
  8. Once you are done, rinse the mouth with water and spit it out.
