Welchol (Generic name: Colesevelam Hcl, is also called Cholestagel) is a prescription medication used to treat high cholesterol. Lowering cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. Welchol contains Colesevelam Hcl which belongs to a drug class of bile acid sequestrant. It can be used alone or with other cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins (Crestor, Lipitor, or Zocor). Welchol is also used to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes), along with diet and exercise. Use Welchol exactly as it was prescribed for you.
Welchol is usually well-tolerated. The most common Welchol side effects are abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, headache, indigestion, nausea, running nose, and weakness.
