Product Details

Ella is an emergency contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It can also prevent pregnancy if another form of contraception has failed. It works by stopping or delaying the release of an egg from the ovaries. It also makes it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach itself to the uterine wall.

The common side effects of Ella include: headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, stomach pain, and menstrual pain.

The more serious side effects may include:

• Severe pain in your lower stomach (especially on one side)
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Hives
o Difficulty breathing
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Precautions

You should not take Ella if you are allergic to Ulipristal Acetate, or if you have already been confirmed pregnant. Before you start taking Ella, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications. This medication can cause harm to an unborn or nursing baby. You should not use this medication while you are pregnant or nursing. Be sure to take Ella exactly as your doctor describes for you. Take Ella as soon as possible after unprotected sex or failed birth control method occurred (within 120 hours immediately after). It can be taken any time of the menstrual cycle. You should wait at least 5 days before starting up any hormonal birth control methods, as Ella can make it less effective.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• If your last menstrual period was more than four weeks ago
• You have not yet started menstruating
• You’ve had an ectopic pregnancy in the past

Questions and Answers

1. Can I have grapefruit while taking Ella?
Answer: Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interfere with this medication. Avoid all grapefruit products during treatment.

2. Can I take this medication any time of the month?
Answer: Yes, this medication can be used during any time of the menstrual cycle. However, it must be started within 5 days of unprotected sex (or failed birth control).

3. My period is a week late. Can I still take Ella?
Answer: If your menstrual period is more than a week late, you will need to contact your doctor to determine whether or not you’re pregnant. This medication will not abort an unwanted pregnancy, only make it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach itself to the uterus. If you are already pregnant, this medication can cause birth defects and other harmful side effects to a fetus.
