What is Atacand HCT?

Atacand HCT is a brand name prescription medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). This medication is a combination of two drugs: candesartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic (water pill).

Atacand HCT generic name is candesartan cilexetil-hydrochlorothiazide.

Candesartan works by blocking the action of angiotensin II that tightens the blood vessels (vasoconstriction), making blood flow more smoothly to the heart and other parts of the body. Hydrochlorothiazide works in the kidneys by helping eliminate of excess water and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride.

Atacand HCT blood pressure medication is used when one drug alone is ineffective in controlling blood pressure.

Directions on how to use Atacand HCT

Take Atacand HCT exactly as prescribed by your physician. Read all the medication guide and instruction sheets and carefully follow all the instructions on the prescription label. Take this medicine orally once per day, on an empty or full stomach, as directed by your doctor. It would be best to not take it within 4 hours of your bedtime to avoid having to get up to urinate.

Taking this medicine regularly is important so you can benefit from it most. Take it at the same time every day to help you remember and not miss a dose. Do not stop using this medication even if you already feel well.

Frequent blood pressure checks will be necessary.

If you must undergo surgery or medical tests, inform your surgeon that you are taking Atacand HCT.

Store Atacand HCT tablets in a closed container at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture.
