Usage

Oracea (Doxycycline) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of rosacea and other bacterial infections. It helps to reduce the number of pimples and bumps on the face. Doxycycline belongs to the class of antibiotics known as tetracyclines. It works by reducing the skin inflammation that is caused by rosacea. Oracea should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour prior to or two hours after a meal with plenty of fluid to reduce the risk of esophageal ulceration. However, this formulation should not be used to treat or prevent infections. Oracea does not work to reduce generalized redness caused by rosacea.

Side Effects

The possible Oracea side effects include diarrhea, mild headache, nausea, upset stomach. Inform your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Changes in hearing;
• Chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or short of breath;
• Dark urine, urination problems;
• Brown or gray tooth discoloration;
• Difficult or painful swallowing;
• Persistent nausea;
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain;
• Vision changes

Precautions and Interactions

You should not take Oracea if you are allergic to Doxycycline or other tetracyclines or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history including:
• Asthma;
• Heart disease;
• Kidney or liver disease;
• Low levels of platelets in your blood;
• Low potassium levels in your blood

Do not take Oracea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication should not be used for pediatric patients under the age of 8 as tooth development is still taking place, and Oracea may cause permanent discoloration of the teeth. Doxycycline can pass into breast milk and may affect bone and tooth development in an unborn baby or children. Talk to your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, and herbal medications. There may be an interaction between Oracea and other medications such as retinoid, digoxin, warfarin and anti-seizure medications, etc. Also tell them about any vitamins and supplements you take. Do not take antacids, laxatives, multivitamins, iron supplements, or calcium supplements within 2 hours before or after taking Oracea. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Always use sunscreen and wear protective clothing. You should not use Oracea if you are pregnant because it can harm an unborn baby. Do not chew, crush, or break a Oracea capsule.
