Protonix (Pantoprazole) belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. It decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Protonix is used for the treatment of erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excess stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Protonix is not for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.

We currently have the brand Protonix from Turkey (also called Pantpas by Bayer), Australia and Canada (also called Pantoloc by Takeda). Generic Pantoprazole comes from UK, India (also Pantosec by Cipla), and Canada (by Marcan or Pharma Science). We may also stock other generic Pantoprazole from different manufacturers around the world. Protonix is available in tablet form and strengths of 20 mg and 40 mg.
Stop using pantoprazole and call your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of low magnesium such as:
• Cough or choking feeling;
• Diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
• Fast or uneven heart rate;
• Feeling jittery;
• Headache, trouble concentrating, memory problems, weakness, loss of appetite, feeling unsteady,
confusion, hallucinations, fainting, seizure, or shallow breathing;
• Jerking muscle movements
Common side effects include:
• Dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling;
• Gas, stomach pain;
• Joint pain;
• Insomnia (sleep problems);
• Nausea, vomiting, mild diarrhea;
• Weight changes
You should not use the Protonix if you are allergic to pantoprazole or to any other benzimidazole medication. This medication is not used for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms. Long-term treatment with Protonix may also make it harder for your body to absorb vitamin B-12, resulting in a deficiency of this vitamin. Protonix is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Pantoprazole can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use Protonix without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. A high-dose of methotrexate treatment may interact with this medication.
