Zelapar (Selegiline hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used with carbidopa or levodopa to treat movement disorders caused by Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder that causes uncontrollable or unintended movements like shaking, stiffness, balance, and coordination difficulties. Zelapar prevents dopamine's breakdown, improving tremors, muscle stiffness, and sudden switches between normal movement and stiffness. This medication may also improve the range of motion and ability to exercise, dress, and walk. However, Zelapar is not a cure for Parkinson's disease. The active ingredient in Zelapar is Selegiline hydrochloride. Selegiline hydrochloride belongs to a class of drugs called monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors. It works by increasing the amount of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a natural substance that controls movement in the body.
