Drug name: Zelapar
Generic name: Selegiline Hydrochloride
Use: Parkinson’s disease

Zelapar is a drug which is used to treat patients who are suffering from Parkinson’s disease, which is a degenerative disease. It contains Selegiline Hydrochloride, which is a drug used to help prevent the breakdown of dopamine, which is a chemical found in the human brain. Reduced amounts of dopamine in the brain are associated with Parkinson’s disease, and it has been proven that by preventing the breakdown of the chemical, this helps to keep patients from deteriorating too quickly. It is given with carbidopa and levedopa.

Zelapar Side Effects

The possible Zelapar side effects include:
• Back pain;
• Constipation;
• Dizziness, feeling weak;
• Mouth sores, ulcers, swollen throat;
• Runny or stuffy nose;
• Sleep problems.

More serious side effects may include:
• Light headedness, fainting;
• Hallucinations;
• Pain or difficulty when urinating;
• Restlessness, agitation, irritability;
• Sudden or severe headache, confusion, blurred vision, loss of balance, nausea, vomiting, seizures;
• Twitching in the muscles.

Zelapar Safety in Pregnancy and Children

Zelapar belongs to pregnancy category C. It is not known whether this drug is harmful to an unborn baby. Zelapar is safe for use in adults over the age of 18 only and should not be given to children under 18 years.
