Dosage

The generic Acenocoumarol is available in the strength of 2 mg and 4 mg tablets.

Usage

Sintrom (Acenocoumarol) is a prescription anticoagulant medication used to treat and prevent blood clots from blocking the blood vessels, e.g., deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Sintrom is also an effective therapy for treating atrial fibrillation with embolization, for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary embolism, and as an adjunct in treating coronary occlusion and transient cerebral ischemic attacks. The active ingredient in Sintrom is Acenocoumarol. Acenocoumarol belongs to the class of medications called an anticoagulant. Acenocoumarol is an anticoagulant that functions as a vitamin K antagonist. It works by reducing the effects of vitamin K, a vitamin your body uses to make blood-clotting factors.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Sintrom are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, itchy skin, loss of appetite, and loss of hair.

Stop using Sintrom and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Fainting;
• Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of face or throat;
• Signs of bleeding such as bleeding in the eye, blood in stools, blood in urine, blood in vomit, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, coughing up blood, dark, tarry stools

Warnings and Interactions

Before you start taking the Sintrom tablet, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Acenocoumarol, or similar medicines called coumarin derivatives (e.g., warfarin, phenprocoumon), or to any of the ingredients in Sintrom. It is essential to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are unsure what to do after missing a dose. It would be best to visit your doctor regularly to ascertain that Acenocoumarol is working effectively via tests done for you, such as checking the international normalized ratio (INR).

Do not change your diet suddenly as it may affect how Acenocoumarol works. Because Acenocoumarol is used to prevent blood clots from forming, you should try to avoid activities that could cause you to cut or bruise yourself, such as contact sports. Let your doctor know if you have any falls or injuries. Reach out to your doctor if suspect that Sintrom is not working for your condition.

Before you start using Sintrom, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Bleeding tendencies associated with active ulceration or overt bleeding of gastrointestinal, genitourinary or respiratory tracts;
• Heart diseases such as infective endocarditis;
• High blood pressure (hypertension);
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Pregnant or breastfeeding;
• Stroke;
• Using other medications that work like Sintrom

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Acenocoumarol should not be administered to pregnant women. Sintrom passes through the placental barrier, and it is dangerous to the fetus and may cause fetal death. It can also cause congenital anomalies in the developing baby. Reach out to your doctor immediately if you discover that you are pregnant while using Sintrom medication. Acenocoumarol passes into breast milk and should not be used by breastfeeding mothers. There may be a drug interaction between Sintrom and other drugs such as metronidazole, amiodarone, chloramphenicol, flutamide, warfarin, and tamoxifen.
