Zetia Information
Zetia (Generic name: Ezetimibe) is a prescription medication used along with diet to treat high cholesterol. Zetia is either prescribed by itself to lower cholesterol, or in conjunction with statin medications (e.g., Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor) to maximize cholesterol reduction. Zetia is also used to treat high blood sitosterol and campesterol along with diet therapy. Unlike the more common cholesterol medications called statins which block the enzyme your liver needs to produce cholesterol, Zetia works by reducing the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract. Take Zetia exactly as it was prescribed for you.
Zetia Side Effects
The most common Zetia side effects are back or joint pain, diarrhea, dizziness, fever, headache, nausea, and etc. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as dark urine, fever or flu symptoms, muscle pain or tenderness, and serious allergic reaction (e.g., rash, hives, difficult breathing, swelling of the lips, throat or tongue), please inform your doctor immediately.
Zetia Precautions
Do NOT take Zetia oral if you are allergic to Ezetimibe or to any of the ingredients in Zetia medication. Do NOT take Zetia if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Before taking Zetia, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney or liver disease, overactive thyroid, and etc. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Zetia drug, especially of: blood thinner (e.g., warfarin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune, Gengraf), steroid medicine or hormones (e.g., birth control pills), and other cholesterol lowering medications. Ezetimibe Zetia has NOT been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attack.
