Penlac solution (Ciclopirox) is a prescription medication used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails. Fungus in the toenail or fingernail begins as a white or yellow-brown spot under the tip of the toenail or fingernail. The nail may be discoloured, thicken, and crumble at the edge as the fungal infection goes deeper. The active ingredient in Penlac solution is Ciclopirox. Ciclopirox belongs to a class of drugs called antifungals. It works by stopping the growth of nail fungus. Penlac solution is often used as part of a treatment plan for nail fungal infections.

We currently offer the brand Penlac solution from Turkey manufactured by Sanofi Aventis in the strength of 8%/3 gm nail lacquer. The generic Ciclopirox is also available from Canada by a different manufacturer in the strength of 8%/6 gm nail lacquer.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Penlac solution. The most common side effects of Penlac solution may include the following:
• Itching;
• Mild burning;
• Redness

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Discoloration or other changes in the nails;
• Severe itching, irritation, or burning

These are not all of the side effects of Penlac solution. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not use Penlac solution if you are allergic to Ciclopirox or any ingredient in Penlac solution. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or planning to be pregnant;
• Are using steroid medication for skin conditions or breathing disorders;
• Have diabetes;
• Have epilepsy or other seizure disorders

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Penlac solution and other medications. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Penlac solution should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is unknown if Penlac solution passes into breast milk and if it may harm nursing infants. Use Penlac solution precisely as prescribed by your doctor. Penlac nail lacquer is a topical medication. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, and inside of the mouth. If this happens, rinse with water. Use Penlac nail lacquer on the nails and surrounding skin only. Avoid contact with other areas. Remove any loose nail using a nail file or nail clippers. Apply Penlac solution once daily, preferably at bedtime, to all affected nails with the applicator brush. Apply the nail lacquer evenly over the entire nail. Allow the lacquer to dry for 30 seconds before putting on socks or stockings. Wait 8 hours after applying the drug before taking a bath. Apply the nail lacquer daily over the previous coat. Remove the nail lacquer once a week with rubbing alcohol. Remove as much as possible of the damaged nail with a nail file or clippers. It may take several months before you notice an improvement in your symptoms. You may need up to 48 weeks of daily nail lacquer application, weekly nail trimming, and monthly removal of the unattached, infected nail by your doctor for complete treatment. Use Penlac solution for the entire prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may increase your risk of further infection resistant to antifungal medicine. Do not use nail polish, artificial nails, or other cosmetic nail products on nails treated with Penlac nail lacquer. Penlac solution is flammable. Avoid using near open flame, and do not smoke until the lacquer is completely dried on your skin. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture.
