Reyataz (Atazanavir) is a prescription medication used to prevent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying in the body. This drug is used with other medicines to treat HIV and prevent it from developing into acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Without treatment, HIV can multiply in the body and cause complications such as new infections and cancer. Reyataz is not a cure for HIV. The drug reduces the amount of HIV in the body, strengthening the immune system. The active ingredient in Reyataz is Atazanavir. Atazanavir belongs to a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by preventing the cleavage of the virus causing HIV from functional proteins necessary for replication.
