Product Details

Iopidine (Apraclonidine) is a medication used to reduce the eye pressure inside the eye. It can be prescribed for both short term use, and for preventing high pressure in the eye.

Common side effects may include blurred vision, dry eyes, eye redness, watering, puffy eyelids, dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. The serious side effects may include:

• Crusting or drainage of the eye
• Eye pain or increased watering
• Feeling like you have something in your eye
• Severe itching, redness, or discomfort of the eye or around the eye
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Hives
o Difficulty breathing
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

You should not use Iopidine if you are allergic to Apraclonidine or clonidine, or if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. It isn’t known whether or not Iopidine will have an effect on an unborn baby. However, it is known to pass into breastmilk, and you should not nurse an infant while taking this medication. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing so you can discuss the risks.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed. Do not use it in larger or smaller dosages, or for longer than recommended. Do not allow the tip of the dropper to touch any surface, including your eyes or hands. Shake your Iopidine eye drops before use and be sure to wash your hands. Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket. Look up and away, while squeezing a drop into the pocket. Close your eyes for 2-3 minutes with your head tipped down. Do not blink or open your eyes. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye for one minute to keep the medication from draining into your tear duct. Wait at least 10 minutes before using any other prescribed eye medication. Do not use if the eye drops have particles or change colors – call the pharmacist for new medicine. Store at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the lid tightly closed and do not freeze.

There may be an interaction between Iopidine and other medications. These include medications that make you sleepy (sleeping pills, narcotic pain medicines, muscle relaxers, antianxiety or antidepressant medications, or antiseizure medications), medicines to treat mental illness, insulin, oral diabetes drugs, blood pressure medications, or heart rhythm medications. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Iopidine. To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Coronary artery disease
• Depression
• Diabetes
• Heart disease (or heart attack / stroke)
• High blood pressure
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
• Peripheral vascular disease

Answer: No. Iopidine loses its effectiveness over time. You will want to throw away or recycle your old medication and get the new prescription. This medication is for short-term use only.
