Budesonide (Oral Route) is available under different brand names in the US including Entocort EC and Uceris. Entocort EC and the generic Budesonide in the strength of 3 mg capsules. The Entocort EC also comes in the strength of 20 mcg/ml (7 x 115 ml) Enemas.

Usage

Entocort EC (Budesonide) is a anti-inflammatory medication that used to treat certain bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Budesonide does not cure these conditions but it may decrease symptoms such as pain and diarrhea. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, in which the body's immune system attacks the gastrointestinal tract. However, inflammation can occur anywhere in the digestive system, from the mouth to the anus. Over time, the inflammation that is caused by Crohn’s disease can damage sections of the digestive system, causing additional complications, such as bowel obstruction. This medications works by decreasing the body’s natural defense response against the gastrointestinal tract.

Side Effects and Precautions

Budesonide usually has fewer side effects than other corticosteroids because budesonide exerts their effects directly upon the gut and only small amounts are absorbed into the body. The common side effects may include back or joint pain, bloating, cold symptoms, constipation, dizziness, feeling tired, headache, indigestion, sore throat, etc.

Avoid large amounts of grapefruits and grapefruit juice while taking this medication as it can raise the levels of budesonide in your body and lead to increased side effects. You should also tell your doctor about all the prescription and OTC medications you take as there may be a drug interaction between Budesonide and other medications, especially: aldesleukin, blood thinners, mifepristone, and NSAIDs. This medication may lower your ability to fight infections. Limit alcoholic beverages as it may increase your risk of stomach bleeding. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
