Usage

Singulair (Montelukast) is a prescription medication that is used to control asthma in adults and children as young as 12 months old. It is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm in adults and children who are at least 6 years old. Singulair also helps to relieve the symptoms of seasonal allergies in adults and children as young as 2 years old. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It works by blocking substances in the body called leukotrienes. Blocking leukotrienes improves asthma symptoms. Singulair is a once a day treatment that can help control asthma for a full 24 hours. Montelukast does not work immediately and should not be used for the fast relief of acute asthma attacks or to prevent or treat asthma made worse by exercise. You should still have your fast-acting asthma relief medication on hand to treat an asthma attack.

Side Effects and Precautions

The most common side effects of Singulair include dizziness, fever, headache, mild rash, tooth pain, tired feeling, upper respiratory infection and upset stomach.

Check with your doctor immediately if you have any of the following side effects:
• Abdominal or stomach pain;
• Flu-like symptoms;
• Pain and tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones;
• Shortness of breath or troubled breathing;
• Tightness of the chest;
• Unusual tiredness or weakness

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Singulair if you are allergic to Montelukast. Before you start taking Singulair, talk to your doctor about your medical history, especially of liver disease or mental or mood problems. The chewable tablet form of Singulair may contain phenylalanine. Inform your doctor before using this form of Singulair if you have phenylketonuria (PKU). Singulair should not be given to a child without a doctor's advice. Montelukast may cause some people to be agitated, disoriented, irritable or display other abnormal behaviors. It may also cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies or depression. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is unknown whether Singulair passes into breast milk. Do not use Singulair without informing your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. There may be a drug interaction between Montelukast and other medication such as gemfibrozil, lumacaftor and mifepristone.
