WHAT IS ENTOCORT EC? 

Entocort EC (Budesonide) is an oral medication used for reducing inflammation in the body. It is a steroid used to treat inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases such as mild to moderate Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. It works by weakening our body’s immune system. 

PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING ENTOCORT EC 

Make sure to follow the directions on the medicine package. Before taking this medication, inform your healthcare provider about other medicines you take, and your medical conditions, including:   

  • Tuberculosis 
  • Infection, such as chickenpox or measles 
  • Hypertension 
  • Immunodeficiency 
  • Osteoporosis, or decreased bone mass 
  • Gastric ulcer 
  • Liver disease 
  • Dermatitis 
  • Any allergy 

Moreso, inform them if you: 

  • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant 
  • Have a family member suffering from diabetes, cataracts, or glaucoma 

Taking Entocort EC capsules while breastfeeding is not recommended.  

Entocort EC capsules are not suggested for children under the age of eight, or for youngsters weighing less than 55 pounds (25 kilograms).

Side Effects of Entocort EC 

Some of the common side effects of Entocort EC are headaches, nausea, vomiting, pain in different parts of the body, fatigue, and dizziness. Report side effects to your healthcare provider when you experience one of the following symptoms: 

  • Thinning of the skin, or bruising easily 
  • Severe Acne 
  • Burning sensation when urinating 
  • Menstrual problems in women, and erectile dysfunction in men 
  • Signs of corticosteroid overdose 
  • Allergic reaction 

Sudden withdrawal from this medication may also worsen these side effects, especially asthma and allergies. Stop using this medication only under the direction of a healthcare professional. Consult your doctor immediately upon experiencing withdrawal symptoms.  

DOSAGE OF ENTOCORT EC 

The Entocort EC generic name is Budesonide 3mg. It is a medication taken by mouth and is usually advised to be taken once daily in the morning.  

The capsules should be swallowed whole and are not recommended to be chewed or crushed. There are also instructions provided for patients who are unable to swallow an intact capsule. The recommended way to consume the capsule without swallowing it whole is to: open the capsule, mix it with one tablespoonful of applesauce, then consume it. Make sure to follow it with a glass of cool water to make sure that the granules have been completely swallowed.  

Entocort EC 3mg is advised for adults with moderate hepatic impairment. This medication is not advised for those who have severe hepatic impairment. 

For the treatment of Crohn’s disease, the 6mg dose is advised. 

To treat mild to moderately active Crohn’s disease, the 9mg dose is advised.
