Amaryl (Glimepiride) is a prescription medication used with a proper diet and exercise program to help control and regulate high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. This medication may also be used with other diabetes medications such as Metformin or insulin when the use of these medications on their own is not able to control blood sugar. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Glimepiride belongs to a class of medications known as sulfonylureas. It works by lowering the blood sugar by causing to release the body’s natural storage of insulin. Amaryl is taken with breakfast or the first main meal of the day, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor.

Taking Amaryl may cause you to experience some common side effects such as nausea and upset stomach . If either of these effects persists or worsens, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. In addition, if you experience any of the following serious side effects, contact your medical health professional immediately. The serious side effects include yellowing eyes or skin, stomach or abdominal pain, dark urine, unusual tiredness or weakness, easy bleeding/bruising, signs of infection (such as fever, persistent sore throat), mental/mood changes, unusual/sudden weight gain and seizures. Taking this medication may cause you to have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). This may occur if you do not consume enough calories from food or if you do unusually heavy exercise. The symptoms of low blood sugar include sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands and feet. It is a good habit to carry glucose tablets or gel to treat low blood sugar. To help prevent low blood sugar, eat meals on a regular schedule, and do not skip meals. Check with your doctor or pharmacist to find out what you should do if you miss a meal. The symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) include thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, and fruity breath odor. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor right away. Your medication dosage may need to be increased.

Amary is not used for treating Type 1 diabetes. You should not take Amaryl if you have diabetic ketoacidosis. Do not take this medication if you are allergic to it. Talk to your medical health professional if you have a medical history of liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease, certain hormonal conditions (adrenal/pituitary insufficiency, syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone-SIADH), electrolyte imbalance (hyponatremia). You may experience blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Furthermore, limit your alcohol consumption while taking this medication as it can increase your risk of developing low blood sugar. Amaryl may make you more sensitive to the sun, limit your time in the sun and avoid sunlamps and tanning booths. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
