Indications

Axert (generic name almotriptan) is a medication used to treat migraines.

Axert belongs to the class of drugs known as triptans and works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain to reduce headache pain and other symptoms of migraines, such as nausea and sensitivity to light/sound.

Use and Dosage

The recommended dose of almotriptan is one 6.25 mg or one 12.5 mg tablet taken at the first sign of a migraine headache. If the headache returns, the dose may be repeated after 2 hours, but no more than 25 mg (2 doses of 12.5 mg) should be taken within 24 hours. If you have no pain relief after taking the first dose, do not take a second dose without first talking with your doctor. If you need to treat more than 4 headaches in 30 days, talk with your doctor.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect from heat, light, and moisture, and keep it out of reach of children.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g., down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using almotriptan and get emergency medical help if you have heart attack symptoms: chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating, and feeling light-headed.

Stop using almotriptan and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • Numbness or tingling and a pale or blue-colored appearance in your fingers or toes
  • Blood circulation problems–weakness or heavy feeling in your legs, burning pain in your feet, leg cramps, hip pain, numbness or tingling in your legs
  • High levels of serotonin in the body–agitation, hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, fainting
  • Stomach or intestinal problems–severe stomach pain (especially after eating), fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, bloody or tarry stools

Common side effects may include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation
  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Mild headache (not a migraine)

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.
