Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim) are both antibiotics used to treat different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, ear infections, Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia, shigellosis, and traveler’s diarrhea and urinary tract infections. This medication works by stopping the growth of the bacteria that causes the infection. It blocks two consecutive steps in the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and proteins essential to bacteria. Bactrim does not work against infections caused by viruses, such as colds and flu.
