Gleevec Information
Gleevec (Generic name: Imatinib Mesylate) is the most prescribed medication used for newly diagnosed adult patients with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) and Kit-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumors (Kit+ GIST). Imatinib Mesylate is a new class of cancer drug that has been approved for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). It specifically targets an abnormal version of a normal cellular protein, present in nearly all CML patients. Imatinib works by killing leukemia cells. Take Gleevec exactly as it was prescribed for you.

Gleevec Side Effects
The most common Gleevec side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, insomnia, muscle cramps, nausea, and vomiting. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as bleeding, bloody stools, confusion, fast heartbeat, fever, jaundice, vision problems, weight gain, and signs of serious allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing; hives; rash; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately.
Gleevec Precautions
Do NOT take Gleevec oral if you are allergic to Imatinib or any ingredients in Gleevec medication. Do NOT take Gleevec pills if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Before taking Gleevec, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions such as blood disorder, cancer, congestive heart failure, kidney or liver disease, lung disease (e.g., asthma, COPD), stomach ulcer, and you are receiving chemotherapy. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Gleevec drug, especially of: Coumadin, Dilantin, NSAIDs, St. john’s Wort, and Tylenol.
