Product Details

Sustiva is an antiviral medicine used to prevent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from spreading and causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This is not a cure for AIDS, but it does help treat the condition for children and adults.

The common side effects of Sustiva include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, rash, headache, tiredness, sleep problems, strange dreams, or changes in body shape and fat storage. The serious side effects may include:

• Impotence
• Menstrual changes
• Problems with balance or eye movement
• Signs of new infection
• Swelling of the neck or throat
• Trouble speaking or swallowing
• Weakness or prickliness in the body

You should not take Sustiva if you are allergic to Efavirenz, or if you also take elbasvir and grazoprevir to treat hepatitis C.

Sustiva may cause serious psychiatric symptoms, such as: confusion, severe depression, suicidal thoughts, aggression, extreme fear, hallucinations, and unusual behavior. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

This medication will not prevent HIV from being passed to other people. Talk to your doctor about preventing HIV transmission through sexual intercourse and never share drug or medicine needles with other people.

You should not use this medication if you are pregnant or nursing. It could cause birth defects or otherwise harm the baby. Nursing will HIV positive can pass on the virus to an infant. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby.

Precautions

Be sure to take Sustiva exactly as your doctor prescribes for you. Follow all instructions that come with your medication and use exactly as directed.

Sustiva must be given in combination with other antiviral medications and should not be used alone. Talk to your doctor about which medications should be combined.

Take Sustiva on an empty stomach at bedtime and take it by swallowing whole. Do not crush, chew, or break it.

Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Drink large amounts of alcohol or have a history of injectable drug abuse
• Heart disease
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B or C)
• Mental illness or psychosis
• Seizures

Sustiva can cause a serious heart problem and depending on your history, your risk may be higher.

There may be an interaction between Sustiva and other medications. The most notable include atripla, efavirenz, and grazoprevir. Talk to your doctor about the risks.

The medication is approved for anyone over 3 months old and weighing at least 8 pounds.
