Indications

Agrylin is a blood medication used to treat thrombocythemia or thrombocytosis, a condition that occurs when your body produces too many platelet cells in your blood. This medication is also used to treat myeloproliferative neoplasms and reduce the risk of thrombosis.

Anagrelide is a platelet reducing drug that inhibits aspects of platelet cells to reduce platelet levels. Thanks to this effect, Agrylin helps reduce your body’s production of platelet cells and prevent the risk of thrombo-hemorrhagic events.

Form and Strength

The dose of Agrylin that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and thrombotic condition being treated. Follow all directions of use given by your healthcare provider and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best response. Do not use more or less than prescribed for a different length of time than recommended.

  • Swallow capsules whole, do not crush or chew
  • Take at the same times each day
  • Can be taken with or without food
  • Most adults start treatment by taking 0.5mg four times daily or 1mg twice a day
  • After at least one week of treatment, doses can be titrated for effective reduction of platelet counts by 0.5mg a day in weekly increments
  • Maintenance doses tend to range from 1.5 to 3mg a day
  • Adults should not take more than 2.5mg in a single dose or exceed a total of 10mg a day
  • Platelet counts should be monitored monthly during treatment with Agrylin
  • Tell your surgeon you take Agrylin before undergoing any surgical procedures
  • Do not suddenly stop using Agrylin, even if you feel well
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

FAQ

Should I take Agrylin with or without food?

You can take your doses of Agrylin with or without food. When taken with food, your absorption of the medicine is slightly decreased but not enough to impact its effect on reducing your platelet counts. Follow all instructions given by your healthcare provider and take your doses at the same times each day for the best therapeutic results.

How long does it take Agrylin to work?

Agrylin is quickly absorbed into your system and should begin to lower your platelet counts within 7 to 14 days after you have reached the proper dose required for you. Doses should increase in small amounts every week until your platelet levels are adequately lowered.
