Elestat (Epinastine) is used to prevent itching of the eyes caused by allergic conjunctivitis. Elestat Eye Drops contain epinastine, an antihistamine that reduces the effects of the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Elestat should not be used to treat eye irritation or discomfort caused by wearing contact lenses. Elestat may also be used for other purposes not listed above. Elestat is typically used twice per day, for only a short time until allergy season ends. Do not use this medication in larger or smaller amounts, or for longer than recommended.

Manufacturer Information

Canadian Pharmacy King currently offers the brand Elestat from Turkey also called Relestat by Allergan. The generic version is unavailable.

Common side effects of Elestat may include mild burning, itching, or eye irritation, watery eyes, headache, or cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, or sore throat. Stop using Elestat and call your doctor immediately if you notice any serious side effects such as:

• Severe burning, stinging, or other irritation after using the eye drops;
• Swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage around your eyelids

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. If you notice any serious side effects not listed above, or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

You should not use Elestat if you are allergic to epinastine, or if you have a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection in the eye, unless you are also using an anti-infective medication. It is not known whether this medication will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. It is not known if this medication passes into breastmilk, or if it will harm a nursing baby. Talk to your doctor about this medication if you are breastfeeding. Elestat should not be given to a child younger than 2 years old without medical advice. Do not allow the tip of the dropper to touch any surface, including your eyes or hands. If the dropper becomes contaminated it could cause an infection in your eye, which can lead to vision loss or serious damage to the eye. Do not use the eye drops if the liquid has changed colors or has particles in it. Call your doctor for a new prescription.

Do not use this medication while wearing contact lenses. Elestat contains a preservative that can discolour soft contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using Elestat before putting your contact lenses in. It is not likely that other medications you take orally or inject will have an effect on Elestat used in the eyes. Tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently taken in order to reduce the risk of any possible interactions. Do not use other eye medications during treatment with this medication unless your doctor tells you to.
