Timoptic XE (Timolol Maleate Gellan Solution) is a prescription eye drop used for the treatment of high pressure inside the eye due to open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Timolol belongs to a class of drugs known as beta-blockers. This medication works by decreasing the amount of fluid within the eye. You may help to prevent blindness by lowering high pressure inside the eye. Timolol XR is usually one drop in the affected eye or eyes once a day or as directed by your doctor.

The brand Timoptic XE comes from Canada and New Zealand and is manufactured by Merck. The generic Timolol Maleate Gellan Solution is available from Canada manufactured by Sandoz. This medication is available in the strength of 0.25% and 0.5 % Solution.

The common side effects may include dry eyes, feeling as if something is in the eye, headache, temporary blurred vision, temporary burning stinging itching or redness of the eye and watery eyes.

Inform your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:

• Coldness, numbness or pain in the hands or feet;
• Dizziness;
• Eye pain swelling or discharge;
• Mental or mood changes;
• Muscle weakness;
• Slow or irregular heartbeat;
• Unusual tiredness or weakness;
• Vision changes

You should not use Timoptic XE if you are allergic to Timolol Maleate or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medication. This medication should not be used if you have lung disease, history of asthma, sever chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, irregular heartbeats, and certain types of heart disease. If you have diabetes, Timoptic XE may prevent the fast pounding heartbeat you would feel with low blood sugar. This medication may cause temporary blurred vision. You should not drive, use machinery or do any activity that requires you to be alert. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. There may be a drug interaction between Timolol Maleate and other medications including propranolol, clonidine, fluoxetine, digoxin, epinephrine, quinidine, etc.
