Caduet Uses

Caduet, with the generic name amlodipine besylate-atorvastatin calcium, is an oral medication indicated to manage hypertension. It could be used alone or along with other antihypertensive drugs. It is also used in coronary artery diseases, such as chronic stable angina, vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal’s or variant angina), and angiographically documented CAD. Caduet helps prevent heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems. It also helps improve the ability to exercise.

This is available in Caduet 10/80 mg, 10/40 mg, 10/20 mg, 10/10 mg, 5/80 mg, 5/40 mg, Caduet 5/20 mg, 5/10 mg, 2.5/40 mg, 2.5/20 mg, and 2.5/10 mg.

What is in Caduet?

This consists of a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (amlodipine) and a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (atorvastatin). This operates by selectively suppressing calcium ion reflux on cell membranes, with vascular smooth muscle cells benefiting more than cardiac muscle cells. It could also inhibit HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver and enhance the uptake and catabolism of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol.

How to use

To initiate, read the medication guide or information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not take this drug if you have not yet understood the drug information in the guide provided. If you need further advice regarding this treatment or have further queries, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily, with or without a meal or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet and take a glass of water thereafter. It is not recommended to cut or divide this product.

Remember to take this oral drug regularly and with a dosing schedule to get the best results. If you are taking this along with other cholesterol-lowering drugs such as colestipol or cholestyramine, take this oral medicine at least one hour before or 4 hours after. Certain medications may prevent their full absorption.

Your Caduet doses will depend on your medical condition, response to treatment, other drugs you are taking, and age. Do not change your dosing or stop taking Caduet abruptly without the advice of your doctor. This could lead to worsening conditions.

Precautions when using Caduet

Before using this oral tablet, you must disclose your entire medical history with your doctor, especially heart problems, liver disease, kidney disease, and alcohol abuse. Certain diseases and disorders may affect how you will respond to the medication. You should also tell your doctor about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products you are taking, for they may have drug interactions with this tablet.

Be watchful for an allergic reaction while on this treatment. Do not take this drug if you have a known allergy to amlodipine, atorvastatin, other calcium channel blockers, or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are severe dizziness, swelling of the face, red patches on the skin, itchiness, and breathing trouble. If this occurs, you must seek emergency medical help immediately.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Caduet. Alcohol may interact with atorvastatin and increase the risk of liver problems. In addition, alcohol may also worsen side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, and lightheadedness.

Consume no grapefruit products or consume grapefruit juice. This is the reason that this fruit could increase the amount of this drug in your system. As a result, the chance of adverse effects increases.

Clinical trials found out that this oral drug could cause harm to unborn babies and nursing infants. Pregnant and breastfeeding moms should not use Caduet unless extremely necessary.
