Description

Generic Name: rosuvastatin calcium

Drug Class: HMG Co-A reductase inhibitor

Indications

Crestor is an oral prescription drug used to reduce total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, triglyceride levels, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol while increasing high-density cholesterol among people with primary hyperlipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia.

It is also used for people with hypertriglyceridemia, primary dysbetalipoproteinemia, and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, this is used to slow atherosclerosis progression and reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization procedures among those with multiple risk factors.

Dosage Forms

This is available in Crestor 20 mg, 10 mg, 5 mg, and 40 mg tablets.

Crestor Mechanism of Action

It catalyzes HMG-CoA conversion to mevalonate, which is a step in cholesterol biosynthesis. This works directly on the liver by decreasing the concentrations of hepatic cholesterol in order to upregulate the hepatic low-density lipoprotein receptors and increase the hepatic uptake of LDL. It also reduces other lipid levels while increasing the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

How to Take Crestor

Before taking Crestor, it is necessary to read the drug information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. Do not take Crestor or any medicine unless you have understood the uses and directions or you’ve talked to your doctor or pharmacist.

Crestor is only meant to be taken by mouth. This is usually prescribed once a day and preferably at the same time each day. It can be consumed with or without food. Swallow the tablet and drink fluids right after.

Make a dosing schedule. If you are prescribed an antacid that either contains magnesium or aluminum, take it two hours after taking this medication. Do not increase or decrease your Crestor dosage. You should also not take this oral drug more frequently than advised.

This oral medication is only an adjunct to proper diet and regular exercise. It may not work as well if lifestyle changes are not applied. Always eat a healthy balanced meal and exercise regularly.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to rosuvastatin or any inactive ingredients the tablet may contain. Always watch for signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop taking Crestor and seek emergency medical help immediately.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of alcohol abuse, kidney disease, and liver disease. You should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking with your doctor due to possible drug interactions.

Avoid or restrict your alcohol consumption while on this statin therapy. Drinking alcohol can further increase the risk of liver damage, especially if combined with rosuvastatin.

Crestor and grapefruit may interact and cause adverse reactions. This is because grapefruit contains compounds that can negatively affect statins. Do not eat grapefruit and drink grapefruit juice while you are on this therapy.

Pregnant moms must avoid this statin because it is known to cause harm to unborn babies. For breastfeeding moms, this medication can pass into breast milk, so you must take this oral drug only if extremely necessary. It is important to discuss with a healthcare provider all possible risks.
