Emend (Aprepitant) is used in combination with other medications to prevent nausea and vomiting that may be caused by surgery or cancer chemotherapy. Emend is given before the treatment (surgery or chemotherapy) and will not treat nausea or vomiting you already have. Aprepitant belongs to the class of medications called antiemetics. It works by blocking the action of neurokinin, a natural substance in the brain that causes nausea and vomiting.

The brand Emend comes from Canada and Turkey manufactured by Merck. The generic Aprepitant is available from India also called Aprecap manufactured by Glenmark. The brand Emend comes in the strength of 80 mg and 125 mg/80 mg/80 mg (Tri-Fold Pack) and the generic Aprepitant is available in the strength of 125 mg/80 mg/80 mg (Tri-Fold Pack) only.

The common side effects of Emend may include hiccups and tiredness. A serious allergic reaction to this medication is very rare. Get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including:

• Itching or swelling;
• Severe dizziness;
• Trouble breathing

You should not take Emend if you are allergic to Aprepitant or if you have any other allergies. There may be a drug interaction between Emend and other medications such as azole antifungals, diltiazem, nefazodone, HIV protese inhibitors, rifamycins, St. John’s wort, and certain anti-seizure medications.
