What is Nexium?

Nexium is a brand-name medication that is available as prescription medicine.

Nexium contains the active ingredient esomeprazole, which belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors which works by blocking the final step in acid production, resulting in reduced gastric acidity.

Due to its mechanism of action, Esomeprazole is used to treat or prevent different conditions involving excessive stomach acid, such as the following:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition manifested by heartburn, regurgitation, reflux, coughing, hoarseness, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing. Nexium is used to treat damage from this condition in adults and pediatric patients aged 1 year and older. It is also used to let the esophagus heal and prevent further damage in adults with GERD.

Nexium Dosage

Nexium comes in different forms and strengths, such as

  • Nexium 20 mg and 40 mg delayed-release tablet
  • Packets for oral suspension: 10 mg

Take Nexium by mouth at least an hour before consuming your meal.

Swallow the capsules whole and do not chew or crush a delayed-release tablet.

Caution

Do not take Nexium if you are allergic to it or to any of its active and inactive ingredients and to similar medicines such as omeprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, and pantoprazole.

Do not use Nexium if you have kidney or breathing problems.

Nexium can cause kidney damage which can happen at any time while using it. You should inform your doctor immediately if you experience changes in your frequency of urination or amount of urine, unusual tiredness or weakness, having blood in your urine, nausea, fever, confusion, swelling of your body, feet, or ankles, and unusual weight gain.

Taking Nexium for a long or on a high dose may increase your risk of having bone fractures. Talk with your healthcare provider about how to make your bones stay healthy.

Diarrhea may also occur when using esomeprazole, and in some cases, it can be serious. Inform your doctor immediately if you have watery diarrhea, blood in your stool, fever, or persistent stomach pain.

Before you take Nexium:

  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe liver disease or lupus.
  • Low levels of magnesium in the blood.
  • Low bone mineral density (osteopenia) or osteoporosis.

Nexium vs Prilosec (Omeprazole)

Nexium and Prilosec belong to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They have some similarities such as their mechanism of action which is to block the actions of an enzyme responsible for acid production in the stomach. They are also available as over-the-counter medicines, no prescription is needed.

These medications also treat GERD symptoms, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, esophagitis (inflammation or erosion of the esophagus), and gastric ulcers (stomach and duodenal) that are either caused by H. pylori or NSAID usage. Moreover, they both cause osteoporosis-related fractures of the spine, hip, or wrist, pneumonia, low vitamin B-12 and magnesium levels, and diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficulty.
