Table of contents:

Uribel is a prescription medication that is used to relieve discomfort, pain, frequent urge to urinate, and cramps/spasms of the urinary tract caused by a urinary tract infection or irritation. Uribel is a combination medication composed of five drugs, namely hyoscyamine, methenamine, methylene blue, phenyl salicylate, and sodium phosphate.

Hyoscyamine is an antispasmodic drug that relaxes the muscles of the urinary tract to relieve cramps/spasms, while methenamine and sodium phosphate work as urinary antiseptics that help to prevent the growth of bacteria in the urine. Methylene blue and phenyl salicylate work together to relieve inflammation and pain in the urinary tract.

Uses and Dosage

Uribel is available in capsule form and should be taken by mouth. The usual dosage for Uribel is one capsule taken 4 times a day for 7 to 10 days. The dosage may vary depending on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Take each dose with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters) and avoid lying down for at least 10 minutes after taking the medication. Unless otherwise directed by a doctor, drink plenty of fluids while being treated with Uribel. If stomach upset occurs, Uribel can be taken with food.

Taking antacids along with Uribel may decrease the effectiveness of the medication, so it is recommended to take Uribel at least one hour before antacids. Additionally, consuming large amounts of caffeine-containing beverages like coffee or tea, eating large amounts of chocolate, or taking nonprescription products that contain caffeine may increase the side effects of Uribel.

If the condition does not improve after a few days or if signs of a urinary tract infection develop (such as painful urination), it is important to inform a healthcare professional.
