Cytotec can also be used to start labor and treat postpartum bleeding due to poor contraction of the uterus. This medication is also used in combination with another drug (mifepristone) to end a pregnancy (abortion). Cytotec works by acting as a synthetic prostaglandin, which is a chemical made within many organs in the body that protects the inner lining of the stomach from the ulcer-producing effects of NSAIDS. Cytotec helps to decrease your risk of serious ulcer complications such as bleeding. Do not use Cytotec if you are pregnant. It can cause dangerous complications in the unborn baby. Use effective birth control during pregnancy, and for at least 1 month after treatment ends. Stop taking this medication and call your doctor immediately if you become pregnant. Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding to discuss any possible risks. To make sure Cytotec is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have intestinal problems, heart disease, or issues with dehydration. Tell your doctor about any medications you are currently taking to reduce the risk of interactions. Avoid antacids while using Cytotec unless recommended by your doctor.
