Indications

Zoloft is an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor derived from naphthalenamine that increases the availability of serotonin in your brain by blocking its reabsorption in the synaptic cleft. This provides Zoloft with antidepressant and antianxiety properties that help improve symptoms from various psychiatric disorders.

This antidepressant medication is well-tolerated with a low incidence of adverse effects and drug interactions. Zoloft has been proven effective in children and adolescents as well as adults with various conditions.

Uses and Dosage

The Zoloft dose prescribed will depend on the individual and condition being treated. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully.

  • Swallow tablet whole
  • Take with or without food
  • Take dose at the same time each day
  • Most adults take an initial dose of 25mg daily
  • Adults with MDD and OCD usually start with 50mg daily
  • Most adults take between 50 and 200mg each day
  • Adults shouldn’t take more than 200mg daily
  • Do not suddenly stop taking Zoloft
  • Sertraline may cause false drug-screen tests results
  • Tell your doctor if you notice changes in sexual function
  • Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat

Side Effects

Zoloft may cause some side effects to develop while balancing serotonin levels in your brain. Consult with your doctor for more information regarding any symptoms you may encounter when taking sertraline.

Common Zoloft side effects:

  • Indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite
  • Nose bleeds
  • Increased sweating
  • Tiredness, insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Tremors or agitation
  • Sexual problems

Tell your doctor about any new or worsening symptoms related to changes in your mood or behaviours such as anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, feeling impulsive, irritable, agitated, aggressive, restless, more depressed, or if you have suicidal thoughts.

Serious Side Effects

Some more serious side effects may occur when taking Zoloft. Stop using this antidepressant and contact your doctor if you notice any of the following side effects:

  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Seizure
  • Changes in vision
  • Eye pain, redness, or swelling
  • Low blood sodium (headache, confusion, thinking or memory problems, weakness, feeling unsteady)
  • Mani episodes (racing thoughts, increased energy, unusual risk-taking behaviour, extreme happiness, irritability, talkative)

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop symptoms of serotonin symptoms. These include agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

Allergic Reactions

Do not use Zoloft if you are allergic to sertraline. If you develop an allergic reaction, stop using this medication and seek medical attention right away.

Zoloft allergy symptoms may include:

  • Skin rash or hives
  • Fever or joint pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions

Do not take Zoloft if you also take pimozide; these medications may interact and cause adverse effects.

Do not use Zoloft within 14 days of using an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, and others. These medications could interact and cause dangerous side effects.

Do not stop taking Zoloft without your doctor’s advice. Suddenly stopping may cause you to experience symptoms of withdrawal.

To ensure the safety of using this antidepressant, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Allergy or sensitivity to aspirin or tartrazine (food dye)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure, a stroke
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Seizures
  • Sexual problems
  • Glaucoma
  • Bleeding problems
  • If you take warfarin
  • Long QT syndrome
  • Low sodium levels

Some young people may have an increase in suicidal thoughts when they first start taking an antidepressant, including Zoloft. Monitor your symptoms and visit your doctor regularly.

This medication may cause you to develop serotonin syndrome (a condition resulting from excess serotonin). Seek immediate medical attention if you notice signs of this condition such as: agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

To avoid serotonin syndrome and other adverse reactions, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products, but especially the following:

  • Opioid medications
  • Stimulant medicine
  • Medication for depression, mental illness
  • Parkinson’s disease medication
  • Migraine medication
  • Antibiotics
  • Nausea and vomiting medicine

Zoloft can cause serious heart problems; this risk may increase if you also use medications for infections, asthma, heart problems, blood pressure, depression, mental illness, cancer, malaria, or HIV.

Consult with your doctor before taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naxopren, and others. These medications may interact with sertraline and cause you to bruise or bleed more easily.

Zoloft is not an approved treatment for anyone younger than 6; it is approved for treating OCD in children, but not depression.

Sertraline may cause harm to an unborn baby if taken while pregnant, but suddenly stopping the medication may not be safe either. Do not start or stop taking Zoloft without first consulting with your doctor.

Ask your doctor if it is safe for you to breastfeed while taking Zoloft.

FAQ

How long does it take for Zoloft to work?

Zoloft may take up to 4 or 6 weeks of treatment for sertraline to reach its full effect. You may see some improvement in symptoms earlier, especially when used to treat depression, but conditions such as OCD and PTSD, it may take closer to 12 weeks. Sertraline needs time to get absorbed and affect your brain chemicals.

Does Zoloft cause weight gain?

Some of Zoloft’s possible side effects can affect your appetite and digestion which can cause some fluctuations in weight. Studies have found slight initial increases in body weight, but these numbers have not been significant. Consult with your doctor if you have any concerns to determine a treatment plan.
