Loniten (Minoxidil) is a prescription medication is used to treat severe high blood pressure (hypertension) that is causing symptoms or damage in your vital organs. It relaxes (widens) blood vessels and improves blood flow. This medication is usually given together with two other medications to help prevent serious side effects. Loniten belongs to a class of medications called vasodilators, and works by relaxing the blood vessels around the heart, which improves blood flow, and in turn lowers blood pressure. Loniten tablets should not be used to promote scalp hair growth period only the topical form of minoxidil (rogaine) is recommended for that use. Loniten may also be used for purposes not listed above.

Canadian Pharmacy King currently offers the brand Loniten from Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom by Pfizer. It is available in dosages of 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg. The generic version is not available.

Common side effects of Loniten may include changes in colour, length, or thickness of body or facial hair, nausea, vomiting, rash, or breast pain or tenderness. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice more serious side effects such as:

• A lightheaded feeling, like you might pass out;
• Chest pain spreading to your jaw or a shoulder;
• Fast or pounding heartbeats;
• New or worsening chest pain;
• Rapid weight gain, especially in your face and midsection;
• Shortness of breath;
• Signs of fluid buildup in the lungs (pain when you breathe, feeling short of breath while lying down, wheezing, gasping for breath, cough with foamy mucus);
• Signs of severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling)

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Contact your doctor if you notice any serious side effects not listed above. If you notice signs of allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

You should not use Loniten if you are allergic to minoxidil, or if you have pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal gland). To make sure Loniten is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had congestive heart failure, angina (chest pain) or if you have recently had a heart attack, kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis), asthma, migraine headaches, or epilepsy or other seizure disorder. It is not known whether this medication will harm an unborn baby. However, a newborn baby could have excessive hair growth if the mother has taken Loniten during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Loniten can pass into breastmilk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breastfeed while using this medication. Do not give this medication to a child without medical advice. You may need to limit or reduce the salt in your diet while taking Loniten. Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes, unless your doctor has told you to. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking a cough or cold medicine that contains a decongestant such as phenylephrine.
