Usage

Carafate Suspension (Sucralfate) is a prescription medication used to treat intestinal ulcers (duodenal ulcers). The active ingredient in Carafate Suspension is Sucralfate. Sucralfate belongs to the class of drugs called a gastrointestinal agent. It works by forming a coat over ulcers, protecting the area from further injury, and healing the ulcer quickly. Effective treatment of duodenal ulcers with Carafate suspension prevents intestinal perforation and other complications that the ulcer may cause.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Carafate Suspension are nausea, constipation, dry mouth, stomach upset, and flatulence.

Stop using Carafate Suspension and contact your doctor right away if you have any severe side effects such as:
• Allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat;
• Diarrhea that doesn't stop;
• Passage of bloody stool;
• Severe constipation and cramps

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Sucralfate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or have any other allergies. The Carafate suspension comes as a liquid in a bottle. It should be taken orally, usually two teaspoonfuls four times daily, on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before a meal, or as directed by your doctor. You should shake the bottle well before each dose. It is essential to continue taking this medication even if you do not feel ulcer pain. Do not stop taking Carafate Suspension without consulting your doctor. It may take 4 to 8 weeks for your ulcer to heal completely. Antacids can be used with this medicine, but they should be taken at least 30 minutes before or after Sucralfate. Inform your doctor if your condition lasts or worsens after taking Sucralfate for four weeks.

Before you start using Carafate Suspension, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have the following:
• Difficulty swallowing;
• Intestinal disorders such as pyloric stenosis, intestinal obstruction, and perforation;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Discuss the risks and benefits of using Carafate suspension during pregnancy. It is unknown if Sucralfate passes into breast milk. It would be best to consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Carafate Suspension and other drugs, such as antacids that contain aluminum, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, tetracyclines, digoxin, ketoconazole, penicillamine, phenytoin, quinidine, and thyroid medications (such as levothyroxine, liothyronine).
