What does Factive do?

Factive, with the generic name gemifloxacin mesylate, is an oral medication used to treat adults with infections that are brought by designated, susceptible microorganisms. Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (ABECB) and community-acquired pneumonia are examples of these illnesses (CAP). Note that Factive should only be used to treat infections that are proven to be caused by bacteria.

This is available in Factive 320 mg tablets.

How does Factive work?

This quinolone antibiotic works by hindering DNA synthesis. This is done by inhibiting both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV or TOPO IV, which are needed for bacterial growth. This medication has bactericidal effects, which means that it can stop the growth of bacteria. Factive is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and could work both on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

How to use Factive?

To begin, read the medication guide or information booklet included with this medicine. Avoid taking any antibiotics if you have not yet fully understood the drug information and all precautions written in the guide. If you need more medical advice on your condition or have queries regarding the use of Factive, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily or as prescribed by your physician. You may take it with or without food. Swallow the medication whole and make sure to drink a lot of fluids while taking this oral drug.

Remember to take Factive on a regular basis and exactly as directed. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your doses. Note that this medication may not work well with certain medications, such as sucralfate, quinapril, vitamins or minerals that contain iron and zinc, and products that may contain magnesium or aluminum. Thus, you should take this antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 3 hours after taking the products that may interact with this medication.

Do not alter your Factive dosage and length of treatment, as it will depend on your medical condition and response to treatment. Also, do not stop taking this medication abruptly and make sure to complete the length of treatment. Stopping the antibiotic too early may cause the return of the infection.

This type of medication may cause QT prolongation. Signs of this heart rhythm irregularity are fainting, severe dizziness, and fast or irregular heartbeat. This is considered a medical emergency. To avoid this, do not take water pills or diuretics and stay hydrated. You should also be monitored for low levels of potassium and magnesium, for this could also increase the risk of QT prolongation.

This type of medication may cause live bacterial vaccines like typhoid vaccine to have less efficacy. As much as possible, do not get vaccinated or immunized while you are using this medication.

Among the adverse effects of this drug are dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. These could be aggravated by alcohol. Limit or avoid your alcohol consumption while on this treatment.
