Norlutate Information

Norlutate (Norethindrone Acetate) is a form of progesterone, a female hormone naturally produced by the body and is important for regulating ovulation and menstruation. Norethindrone is used for birth control (contraception) to prevent pregnancy. Norethindrone is also used to treat menstrual disorders (lack of menstruation); endometriosis; or abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by a hormone imbalance. Norlutate should be prescribed only to women with intact uteri. Norlutate should be used only under the supervision of a doctor, with regular follow-up at least once a year to identify side effects associated with its use. Norlutate is not intended for use as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for treating menopausal and post-menopausal symptoms.

Norlutate Side Effects

The most common side effects of Norlutate may include swelling of ankles or feet; irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting; breast pain or swelling; stomach pain; nausea; hair loss; depressed mood; weight gain; absent menstrual period and mild headache. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as: • Abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting;
• Breakthrough bleeding, change in menstrual flow, spotting or unexpected vaginal bleeding;
• Changes in weight (increase or decrease), fluid retention;
• Headache;
• Persistent sad mood.

Norlutate Precautions

Do not use Norlutate if you are allergic to Norethindrone Acetate or to any other ingredients in this medication or if you have any other medical problems, especially if you have or have had problems such as stroke, heart attack, or coronary heart disease; have or have had liver disease; have known or suspected endometrial cancer or any other cancer which is sensitive to estrogens or progestins; have known, suspected or history of breast cancer; have undiagnosed genital bleeding; have a known or suspected pregnancy; had or have confirmed blood clots or inflammation of the veins; had partial or complete loss of vision due to blood vessel disease in the eye; suffer from missed abortion. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have a history of allergy or intolerance to any medications or other substances; have a personal history of breast disease (including breast lumps); have experienced any unusual or undiagnosed vaginal bleeding; have a history of uterine fibroids; have a history of liver disease, jaundice; have a history of migraine headache; have high blood pressure; have a personal or family history of blood clots; have kidney disease, asthma or epilepsy; have a history of bone disease; have diabetes; have a disease of blood pigment); have high cholesterol or high triglycerides; are pregnant or may be pregnant; have had a surgical removal of the uterus; smoke; have lupus; have or have had a history of depression; have or have had gallbladder problems; are breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Norlutate and other medications.
