Usage

Humatin (Paromomycin Sulfate) is a prescription medicine used to treat several parasitic infections, including amebiasis, giardiasis, leishmaniasis, and tapeworm infection. The active ingredient in the Humatin tablet is Paromomycin Sulfate. Paromomycin Sulfate belongs to the group of medicine called aminoglycoside antibiotics (antiparasitic agents). It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth (interfering with bacterial protein synthesis by binding to 30S ribosomal subunits). However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Humatin are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, and abdominal pain.

Stop using Humatin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Muscle weakness;
• Numb or tingling skin;
• Ringing/roaring sounds in the ears;
• Hearing loss;
• Seizure or uncontrolled body movement;
• Severe headache;
• Sudden loss of consciousness

Warnings and Interactions

Before you use the Humatin tablet, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or other aminoglycoside antibiotics. This medication comes as a tablet and should be taken with meals to prevent stomach upset. Your dosage of this medicine depends on your weight and the severity of your condition. Therefore, you should follow your doctor's prescription carefully. In addition, if you are still receiving vaccination/immunization (typhoid or live cholera), you should let your doctor know before you commence this medication. Humatin may affect the potency of such vaccines. It would be best to continue to take this medication until you finish your total prescribed dosage, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue growing, resulting in the infection's return. However, you should inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or it appears as if the medication is not helping your symptoms.

Before you start using Humatin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Intestinal problems (such as blockage and ulcers);
• Kidney diseases;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection)

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. It would be best to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant when treating intestinal amoebiasis with a Humatin tablet. During pregnancy, this medication should be used when prescribed by a doctor. You should have an open conversation with your doctor and discuss the risks and benefits. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Humatin and other drugs such as amiodarone, digoxin, ketoconazole, loratadine, erythromycin, typhoid vaccine, cholera vaccine, live, etc.
