Usage

Angeliq (Estradiol/Drospirenone) is a combination medication that is used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, and vaginal dryness, burning and irritation. This medication contains Estradiol, which is the synthetic version of the female hormone estrogen. Drospirenone is a form of progestin which is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Estradiol replaces the estrogen your body loses during menopause, which helps relieve hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Drospirenone protects the uterus from damage and helps prevent uterine cancer. Angeliq is used only if you have a uterus; this medication is not approved to be used for women who had a hysterectomy.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Angeliq may include bloating, breast tenderness, changes in sleep patterns, change in vaginal discharge, dizziness, headache, light-headedness, increased or decreased interest in sex, nausea, weight changes and upset stomach.

The serious side effects of Angeliq may include:
• Breast lumps;
• Mental or mood changes;
• Nipple discharge;
• Signs of worsening diabetes;
• Slow or irregular heartbeat;
• Stomach or abdominal pain;
• Yellowing eyes or skin;
• Worsening of seizure condition

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Angeliq if you are allergic to estradiol or drospirenone or if you have:

• A major surgery in the near future;
• Had a history of blood clot stroke, heart attack, breast cancer, or cancer of uterus or vagina

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications. Angeliq has very serious interactions with anastrozole and tranexamic acid. This medication may make you dizzy or lightheaded. Do not drive or do any activity that requires you to be alert. Limit alcoholic beverages. This medication should not be used during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor before you breast-feed a baby as you should not breastfeed while taking this medication. Angeliq can also reduce breast milk production. This medication may cause a patchy darkening of the skin on the face. You should avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths and sunlamps.
