Usage

Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil) is a combination medication used to prevent and treat malaria. Malaria is a serious mosquito-borne illness that can be deadly if left untreated. Parasites that cause malaria typically enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malarone is usually prescribed to those traveling to malaria-endemic areas, including sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. The active ingredients in Malarone are Atovaquone and Proguanil. Malarone belongs to the class of medication called antimalaria. Atovaquone works by stopping the malaria parasite from being able to make energy for itself (inhibiting the mitochondrial electron transport). Without energy, the malaria parasite dies off. Proguanil is thought to work by boosting atovaquone's effect on the malaria parasite.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Malarone are stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and headache

Stop using Malarone and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Altered sleep patterns and abnormal dreams;
• Loss of appetite;
• Severe abdominal pain

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Malarone, inform your doctor if you are allergic to it or have other allergies. Malarone is a tablet, and it should be taken orally. Take Malarone at the same time each day with food or a milky drink. Malarone is effective for both adults and children. Malarone may be crushed and mixed with condensed milk just before administration for children with difficulty swallowing. It is recommended to take one tablet of Malarone daily starting a day or two before traveling to the area where malaria transmission occurs. They should take one dose daily while there and for 7 consecutive days after leaving. Follow your prescription label carefully. Do not miss a dose or stop using without completing your dose. Do not switch to another antimalaria without speaking with your doctor. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. You should contact your doctor as soon as possible if you have been exposed to malaria or if you have a fever or other symptoms of illness during or after a stay in an area where malaria is common.

Before you start using Malarone, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Liver problems;
• Severe kidney problem;
• Uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Malarone can harm the unborn baby. Pregnant women and women who are nursing infants less than 5kg or infants who weigh less than 5kg should not take atovaquone-proguanil. Atovaquone and proguanil can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Speak with your doctor before using this medication, either in pregnancy or as a nursing mother. There may be a drug interaction between Malarone and other drugs such as coumadin, warfarin, aspirin, and sulfur-containing medications. Keep the tablet away from children's reach.
