What is Combipatch?  

Combipatch (Estradiol/Norethindrone) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of symptoms of menopause. It is a combination of estradiol, a form of estrogen, and norethindrone, a form of progesterone. It belongs to a class of drug called sex hormone combinations or estrogens/progestins HRT, which works by penetrating into the skin to release amounts of estrogen and progestin.

This medication puts you at an increased risk of getting dark areas on your face and skin, which is called melasma. Avoid contact with direct sunlight for too long, tanning booths, and sunlamps. Always remember to wear sunscreen and protective clothing when going outside.  

Being nearsighted and wearing contact lenses puts you at an increased risk of vision problems or trouble wearing your contact lenses. Consult an optometrist for medical advice.  

Inform the testing personnel if you will be undergoing an MRI test, as some patches contain metal and may cause serious burns. Consult your doctor if you have to remove the medication patch before the test and use a new one after. 

Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, especially because it puts them at an increased risk of stroke, dementia, and breast cancer. 

This medication is not recommended to be used while pregnant. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, inform your healthcare provider immediately. 

This medication passes into breast milk and is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers as it can reduce milk amount and quality. If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, inform your healthcare provider immediately.

Combipatch Dose 

Act in accordance with your healthcare provider’s directions concerning the prescribed dose for your medical condition. Read the medication guide and prescription labels for the drug information and directions in taking this medication. Ask for help from a doctor or pharmacist if you don’t understand the instructions in using this medication. 

Combipatch comes in one dosage form, an extended-release patch, and two dosage strengths, which are Combipatch 0.05mg/0.25mg per 24 hours, and Combipatch 0.05mg/0.14mg per 24 hours. 

For the treatment of vasomotor symptoms caused by menopause, apply one patch on your lower stomach below the waistline. Make sure to apply the medical patch on clean, dry, and smooth skin.  

For a Combipatch alternative regimen, use one patch (0.05mg per day) for day 1 – 14, and must be replaced twice a week, then one patch on day 15 – 28, which also must be replaced twice a week.  

In case you missed a dose of this medication, take the medication patch as soon as you remember. However,  if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one. Don’t take a double dose of Combipatch to make up for the missed dosage.  

If you are experiencing fainting or trouble breathing which are possible symptoms of an overdose, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.
