Malarone Information

Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) is used to prevent and treat malaria in areas such as Africa, South America, and South Asia, where malaria is common. Malaria parasites (Plasmodium falciparum) can enter the body through mosquito bites and live in body tissues such as the red blood cells or the liver. People of any age can get malaria. It is a serious but preventable disease. It is essential to take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Use insect repellent on exposed skin areas. Wear light-colored clothing covering most of the body, especially after sunset, as this is when mosquitoes are most active. Sleep in a screened room or under a mosquito net. Malarone Side Effects

Malarone Precautions

Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have kidney disease; have liver disease; have uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea; have severe malaria complications; are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Malarone and other medicines like metoclopramide; tetracycline; efavirenz; warfarin; etoposide. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Malaria is more likely to cause death in a pregnant woman. Your doctor will prescribe Malarone in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Proguanil passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this drug with food or a milky drink. It is best to take Malarone at the same time each day. If you vomit within 1 hour of taking Malarone, take another dose immediately. Take the medicine every day for 3 days in a row. It is essential to take the full course of Malarone. If you are taking this drug to prevent malaria, start by taking it 1 to 2 days before traveling to an area with mosquitoes. Continue taking it daily during your stay and another 7 days after your return to a malaria-free area. This drug should not be used in children who weigh less than 11 kg. Malarone may cause dizziness. Do not drive if you feel dizzy. Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
