Kombiglyze XR (Generic name: Saxagliptin or Metformin HCl extended-release) is NEW combination medication used to treat type 2 diabetes (non insulin dependent diabetes). Kombiglyze XR contains two types of diabetes medications Saxagliptin and Metformin XR. Saxagliptin belongs to the class of medication called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. Saxagliptin works by increasing the levels of natural substsances called incretins in order to control the blood sugar. Metformin HCl extended-release (XR) is a biguanide that works by reducing the amount of sugar made by liver and helps the body respond better to the insulin. Kombiglyze XR should be used with a proper diet and exercise programs and other medications to improve the glycemic control. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent heart disease, kidney disease, and strokes. Take Kombiglyze XR exactly as it was prescribed for you.
The most common Kombiglyze XR side effects are diarrhea, dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach pain, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and vomiting. If you experience any severe side effects including confusion, fainting, fast heartbeat, muscle pain, tremor, urination problems, or symptoms of a serious allergic reactions (e.g., difficult breathing; itching; rash; swelling), please inform your doctor immediately.
Kombiglyze XR is NOT used to treat type 1diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Do NOT take Kombiglyze XR if you are allergic to Saxagliptin or Metformin XR or any of the ingredients in Kombiglyze XR medication. Before taking Kombiglyze XR oral, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions, such as alcohol problems, diabetic ketoacidosis, heart disease, kidney or liver problems. Tell your doctor about all the prescriptions or over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use, especially of: antibiotics, antifungals, heart medications, high blood pressure medications, HIV/AIDs medicines, other diabetes medicines. They may interact with Kombiglyze XR drug.
