Description

Generic Name: ramipril

Drug Class: angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitor

Altace Uses

Altace is an oral prescription drug used to manage high blood pressure. It is also given to stable patients who manifest clinical signs of congestive heart failure (CHF) after myocardial infarction. It decreases the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular causes.

Altace Dosage Forms

This is available in Altace 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg tablets.

Altace Mechanism of Action

It works through the suppression of plasma angiotensin II, which leads to decreased vasopressor activity and aldosterone secretion. Then, it inhibits the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which follows an antihypertensive effect. It relaxes the blood vessels in order to allow blood to flow thoroughly.

How to Take Altace

Before you start taking Altace, it is necessary to read the drug information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. Ensure that you understand the directions and use of any medication before taking it. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional information or advice.

Altace is usually prescribed once or twice a day and is only meant to be taken by mouth. You can take it either with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Swallow the oral tablet and drink fluids right after.

Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your Altace dosage. It is also advisable not to take this oral drug more frequently than prescribed.

Warnings and Precautions when using Altace

Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to ramipril or any inactive ingredients the capsule may contain. Watch for hives/itchiness, swollen lymph nodes, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or neck, severe dizziness, and skin rashes that might indicate an allergic reaction. Seek emergency medical attention if any of those occur.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of hyperkalemia and going through blood-filtering procedures. Due to potential drug interactions, you should discuss all of your prescription and nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal remedies with your doctor.

Dizziness and lightheadedness are among the common adverse effects of this medication. Keeping alert and clear vision is essential when performing tasks requiring alertness. You must also limit your consumption of alcoholic drinks.

Ramipril may cause high potassium levels in the blood. Make sure to look out for muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat. Notify your physician before you take any kind of vitamin/supplement or salt substitute that may contain potassium.
