What is Combivent Respimat?

Combivent Respimat, with the generic name ipratropium bromide and albuterol, is an inhalation drug used to manage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It also treats and prevents symptoms like shortness of breath and wheezing.

This inhalation spray combines anticholinergic and beta-adrenergic drugs. It works by inhibiting vagally stimulated reflexes like bronchoconstriction and relaxes the airway’s smooth muscle, allowing a person to breathe more easily. Combivent Respimat is available in Combivent Respimat 20/100 mcg (=120 mcg albuterol) per actuation.

Combivent Respimat – How to use

To initiate, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this inhaler. Do not use this inhaler unless you have fully understood all instructions and information in the guide. Ask your pharmacist or physician if you need more details on the instructions or have further queries about this drug.

Remember to use this inhalation spray regularly and as prescribed by your physician. This inhalation is usually used 4 times a day. However, your Combivent Respimat dosage will still depend on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you are using. Do not alter your dosage and frequency. Continue using this inhalation even if you feel better.

When administering the spray, avoid getting the drug into your eyes. This could cause eye irritation, temporary blurred vision, or other vision changes.

Step by step guide in using Combivent Respimat inhaler:

Make sure that the orange cap is still closed. Press the safety catch in the middle of the inhaler as you pull off the clear base. Do not the piercing component inside the clear base.

On the label of the inhaler, write the discard date.

*discard date – three months from the date the cartridge has been inserted.

Take the cartridge out of the box. Insert the narrow side of the cartridge into your device. Do not remove the cartridge once it has already been inserted.

Place the clear base and orange cap back into the inhaler.

Hold the device in an upright manner. Turn the clear base to the direction of the white arrow in the label. You will hear a click.

Flick the orange cap until it is fully opened. Move the inhaler away from your face and push the release button. If the spray is already visible, do it three times to ensure that the inhaler is ready to use.

Exhale slowly and deeply. Put the inhaler in your mouth and seal your lips around the mouthpiece. Remember that your hand or fingers should not cover the air vent.

Inhale slowly and fully through your mouth and simultaneously press the dose release button fully.

Hold your breath for not less than 10 seconds or as long as comfortable. Then, exhale slowly.

Close the orange cap, then breathe normally. Rinse your mouth with tap water. Spit it out.
