What is Ddavp (Desmopressin) Nasal Spray?

Ddavp medication is a brand-name prescription medication administered into the nose (intranasal use). It has an active substance called desmopressin acetate, a man-made analogue of the natural hormone arginine vasopressin. Desmopressin Ddavp Nasal Spray belongs to two classes of drugs: antidiuretics and antihemorrhagics. It works by replacing vasopressin to help balance the amount of salt and water in the body. It acts on bleeding episodes by increasing Factor VIII, ristocetin cofactor, and von Willebrand factor, resulting in less bleeding for those with low amounts of these agents. This drug is mainly eliminated in the urine. Ddavp Nasal Spray is contraindicated in patients with or history of hyponatremia and with moderate to severe renal impairment.

What is Ddavp (Desmopressin) Nasal Spray Used For?

Ddavp uses as follows:

  • Ddavp is used to treat central diabetes insipidus, a condition that causes thirst and frequent urination.
  • This medication is also used to control temporary excessive thirst and the production of an abnormally large amount of urine that can happen after a head injury or certain types of brain surgery.
  • This medication is also used to treat or prevent bleeding episodes in Hemophilia A patients and von Willebrand’s disease.
