Differin Information:

Differin (Generic name: Adapalene) is a topical (applied to the skin) medication to treat acne and other skin conditions in people 12 years old and older. It is similar to vitamin A in that it helps the skin renew itself. Differin products come three different preparations: 0.1% cream, 0.1% gel, and 0.3% XP gel. Your doctor will determine which is the best for you. Apply a thin layer to cleansed skin once daily in the evening. It may take several weeks to several months before you see results with Differin, and your acne may worsen briefly before it improves. Using more Differin or using it more often than prescribed will not increase its effectiveness, and may cause side effects. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your usual dosing schedule. Do not double up your dosage. Store Differin at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Differin Side Effects:

The most common side effects of Differin include dry, red, scaly, warm or stinging skin. Side effects of the 0.3% gel may also include general skin discomfort, itching, and sunburn. These effects are usually mild to moderate, and decrease with continued treatment. Differin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and skin products such as soaps, cleansers, hair removers and products with alcohol or astringents. Avoid exposure to sunlight and tanning beds and use a minimum SPF 15 sunscreen. Do not apply on irritated, chapped, sunburned, dry or broken skin, on areas of eczema, or on skin that has been depilated with wax products. Flush with water if any medication gets in your eyes or on your lips, and avoid getting it in the creases around your nose.

Differin Precautions:

Hives, a rash, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat could indicate an allergic reaction requiring emergency medical attention. You should also inform your doctor if you experience swelling, crusting, blistering or excessive redness or peeling. Do not use other medication skin products or skin products that contain alpha hydroxyl or glycolic acid with Differin acne treatment unless your doctor instructs you to. Differin has not been approved for use by pregnant or nursing women, or by the elderly. Because of Differin’s low absorption into the blood, the risk of negative interactions with other medications is low.
